As adults, we’re pretty awesome at a lot of things.<br />
We tackle big challenges in our careers, our finances, and our health. We build impressive things. We write legal documents. We manage teams and conferences and estates and classrooms.<br />
But when it comes to parenting, we often feel surprisingly unsure whether we know what we’re doing at all.<br />
We love these kids of ours with a love so fierce and strong, and yet, half the time we shake our heads and wonder if we’re getting it all wrong and why this parenting gig is so darn hard???<br />
Raising these hilarious, amazing, wild little humans of ours is both tough and tremendous, precious and perplexing, all at the same time. In fact, I don’t know about you, but it’s not uncommon for me to feel totally conflicting things at any given moment:<br />
<br />
Looking forward to a quiet empty nest, while wishing I could just freeze time and keep my children exactly as they are in this moment.<br />
<br />
Desperately longing for some peace and quiet, while loving the chaos and life surrounding me.<br />
<br />
Wishing everyone would stop saying, “Mom! Mom! Mom!” even as I’m craving conversation with these fascinating little people of mine.<br />
<br />
No matter what your day has been like…<br />
<br />
…whether you locked yourself in the bathroom to cry after you blew up at your kids.<br />
<br />
…or if “Mama needs some alone time” evolved into hiding in the pantry and inhaling a bag of dark chocolate chips.<br />
<br />
…or your budding artist decided today was the day to create a mural on the living room wall with your colored Sharpies…<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
There’s one thing you already know.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Sometimes parenting is awesome. And sometimes it’s not.<br />
You’ll take the not-so-awesome parts along with the beautiful parts. Because it’s so worth it.<br />
But if you could find resources to help make it a little more awesome and a lot less hard?<br />
<u><b>It’d be a no-brainer!</b></u><br />
<u><b><br /></b></u>
Well, look no further, because I found something that might be <i>just </i>what you need: The Parenting Super Bundle. For six days only, you can get your hands on a package full of resources to help you rock this parenting gig even more, for the most affordable price ever. (Seriously, just wait until I tell you the price.)<br />
This brand-new bundle includes 35 ebooks, 10 eCourses, 23 printables, 9 workbooks, 2 audios, and 1 membership site.<br />
These top-quality resources cover <i>everything </i>you need to make parenting feel less stressful (and more fun!)… chore charts (yay!), discipline methods and ideas, strategies for tough challenges (for kids and for parents), printable craft ideas, homeschooling helps, and so much more.<br />
For less than the cost of a gallon of paint to touch up your little Picasso’s mural, you’ll get a complete library to help you:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Apply step-by-step solutions to common challenges like whining, arguing, homework, and lack of cooperation</li>
<li>Build stronger relationships with your kids (even your teens)</li>
<li>Stop playing referee in sibling battles (and teach them how to work things out)</li>
<li>Instill gratitude, kindness, and helpfulness in your child</li>
<li>Become a kinder, more intentional parent and feel encouraged and inspired in your parenting.</li>
</ul>
<br />
Plus, it comes with over $100 worth of bonus offers from companies you’ll love (this is one of my favorite parts).<br />
You sort of need to see it to believe it, but the package includes<b> 80 digital products </b>and it’s worth <b>over $1270</b>!<br />
Besides being so incredibly helpful, one of the things I like best about the bundle is the price. By offering it for a short time only, they’re able to give you access to over $1270 worth of amazing products for a whopping <b><span style="font-size: large;">98%</span> off</b>!<br />
<br />
Here’s how it works:<br />
<br />
Visit their website, take a quick look at all the goodness that comes in this package, then click the “Get my copy now!” button to go through their simple and secure 3-step checkout process.<br />
You’ll receive an email with a login to their online access portal, where you’ll begin downloading your eBooks, signing up for your eCourses, and redeeming your free bonus offers.<br />
Use their Getting Started Guide to pick the topic you want to tackle first and give you joy in your parenting journey!<br />
<br />
The most important detail, though, is that this bundle is available for just<b> six </b>days! After Monday night, August 14th, the sale ends and you’d have to buy all of these products individually<br />
I’d hate for you to miss out, so click HERE (<a href="https://us154.isrefer.com/go/PARSB2017/a9310/">https://us154.isrefer.com/go/PARSB2017/a9310/</a>) to learn more or buy the bundle.<br />
It’s even backed by a 100% happiness guarantee, so you can make sure it’s right for you.<br />
As you already know, parenting is amazing and difficult. Enjoying it even on the craziest of days is not impossible.<br />
You don’t need to be a perfect parent to raise great kids, but if you (like me) could use a little help, learn more or get your bundle HERE (<a href="https://us154.isrefer.com/go/PARSB2017/a9310/">https://us154.isrefer.com/go/PARSB2017/a9310/</a>. )<br />
(Psst… the bundle goes away at 11:59 pm Eastern on Monday, August 14th, so don’t wait!)<br />

If you've been following the curriculum, we have a few candy cane activities for your kids. My kids were very curious about how candy canes are made, so I supplemented with these 2 videos. The first one (above) is about handmade candy canes. The second one, below, is about factory made candy canes. Enjoy!<br />

Frustration can come from many different sources, but today I'm going to talk about one in specific.<br />
<br />
Let me start by explaining our situation. My oldest is very good at math; she also has a tendency to be lazy towards school. My middle child struggles ferociously with math; she also has a tendency to cry and shut down. My third is great at math; he tends to not care at all about school and I often find him having turned his crayons into tiny toys and making them talk. Granted, he's 5. But still.<br />
<br />
When one of my children was struggling with a particular math skill, we taught it, reviewed it, practiced it, drilled it. We made flash cards, we practiced in the car. Yet, she <i>still</i> had difficulty. Finally the tears (and this is my non-crier).<br />
<br />
So I started thinking about what motivates her and her siblings. It's different for each one of them. When I have an activity I need to complete, motivation makes all the difference. Sometimes we need an external motivator, especially when our internal motivation in nowhere to be found (folding laundry, anyone?)<br />
<br />
When your child is working and you run into difficulty that is <i>not</i> attitude related, stop and think about what motivates them. (Although I will say, attitude can turn up because of frustration and discouragement. But I'm talking about difficulty that is not simply attitude related).<br />
<br />
For my oldest, competition is the key. She doesn't even have to be competing with anyone other than herself. So, we made learning the skill a timed competition <i>with herself</i>. She's trying to get her best score. That was the game-changer. For another child, she is food motivated. I could put a timer on, have her complete a page of math (or whatever she's working on) and for each correct answer, she gets 1 chocolate chip. <i>Now</i> she's motivated to get as many right in a short amount of time as possible. My youngest is motivated by play.<br />
<br />
So, here's a list of ideas to help motivate your children when it's getting tough. In our house, having a good attitude is a given. There's no 'prize' for a bad attitude, so this is unlike bribery. This is taking a challenging skill (learning XYZ) and motivating them to work towards it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Food (ex: one chocolate chip, marshmallow, grape, raisin, for each item completed in a certain time frame)</li>
<li>Food (I will set the timer for X amount of time. After you've ______ <i>diligently</i> for X minutes, we can have a snack).</li>
<li>Time together (When you are finished with X, we can play a board game, read a book, etc).</li>
<li>Competition (Compete against a sibling, you, or even themselves)</li>
<li>Make the learning fun (Teach a skill and then have them teach their dolls. Make a racetrack and let them drive cars on it, making a sound they are learning at each stop. Sing a song.)</li>
<li>Use toys as props. </li>
<li>Have them teach YOU!</li>
</ul>
<div>
There are so many things you can do to help your children love to learn. When one child was not quite understanding measurements using fractions, we made cookies. And I let her make them wrong on purpose. (FYI, 2 1/4 cups is NOT the same as 1/4 cup 2 times). But guess who is now making cookies independently (among other recipes)? My 7 year old. But the idea of being allowed to make cookies by herself, from scratch, was a huge motivator for her to correctly learn fractions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
<br />
So, when you hit a wall, start thinking about motivation. What motivates your child? Let us know! I made these cards for Brinley's playgroup this month. You print them off, cut them out each page is cut into four pieces--cut off the title and the footer).<br />
<br />
You can print them on cardstock or laminate them to make them more sturdy.<br />
<br />
Then you give the cards to the child along with some clothes pins. The child takes a clothes pin and pins it to the circle that matches the Jack-O-Lantern's mouth.<br />

Before we start back with school, preschool, or homeschooling, let's have a little more summer fun!<br />
<br />
Here are a few more ideas to get you through the end of the summer!<br />
<br />
<b>Paint Free Painting</b><br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU_apGamP5iAh9WWmbFnwLSnZC3Bc8OmGPc-DFewHII8sNB6oMgOWJEkMNFz3AlGFa1Zi4PUUAJ5lsBmUQrZvJViHsb-tcJUqoHtt3r31x4njsgHREVQit6JCPyiia46mi15RsbY6RICc/s320/P1170410.JPG" />Painting can be fun, but messy! If you have a sidewalk, a fence, or a deck, this is an easy outdoor activity for your kiddos. Just fill a bowl or cup with water, give them some painting utensils, and paint away! It dries quickly and leaves a clean canvas behind.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Pouring a Drink</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">My kids have always loved trying to pour with a pitcher. The dollar store has super cheap containers, too. Even the smallest kids will be able to try this without fear of a giant indoor mess to clean up if they spill. Try mixing in ice, too. While your kids are playing outside, let them try to pour themselves a drink on a hot day. It's excellent for their motor skills, and great practice for life. To encourage my kiddos to practice this skill without any cleaning on my part AND to help keep them hydrated on those oh-so-hot summer days, I fill up (yes, completely, otherwise you'll make multiple trips to fill up the pitcher) a pitcher with ice water and bring out one plastic cup per child. I just set it out and told them to pour themselves a drink if they got thirsty. My three year old said, "By myself?" (Insert happy face here). Their faces lit up and they poured drink after drink....and drank it all. Well, whatever managed to get in the cup. </span><br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXbYCWzREddrhzO_wo38FykgdXbe9SizXvuEMy5v73X5JJ4BB1bvuaXly2GLWIteketeN3d6W4CNhvNLHJzyPeK2msE8d86nzQywnBhVBY-A5mw0bu7gKkibu4Rji4VZ3NSmDYiyLwZE4/s320/P1170389.JPG" /><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUlD4Dy73RnuhTg8DfKbhzZHqTmUPmeLdh8IDre0FyNExgo7oA0W9JAASBmcf4pulU4tAO1wHAeDb0BA5QmQWKZ_GQm7OeHAmDER03Hda8HHDVrtAoDF6KW-rk_bxSH05xsn8xUPweF9s/s320/P1170383.JPG" /><br />
<br />
<b>Outdoor Bubble Bath</b><br />
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxgibnC40Gv1Pst2VrnYNToTNYbHTkZJzfSg-Cpnwj_EOZEBrnRLfYTpYLAxHz29jK1kWHb4e4m4dtht6BWmxvHhfx0FZ3VW4NGbjwn2SXWxJlwcUn_5ON2UUAKSXlcznsxrZ8jPia4m0/s320/P1170386.JPG" /><br />
Pretty self explanatory, but fill up a swimming pool with water and bubbles. Dawn dish soap works great, but doesn't agree with my kids' skin. We used Seventh Generation and it worked great.<br />
<br />
<b>You-Pick Farms</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
We're about picked out here, but if you have any farms near you still offering You-Pick, try it out! We picked strawberries and blueberries and our apples will be in soon here on the east coast. <img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjseNTlcLhYu7YrS1mWlwQdBzCFfK-mFAfLbvdISzT8HbZrhg2e7cYBAwtBix4_JxZ0qzNzL9dc9G8PKHcE91Bwv0kq0qtpm58qL8u9NEOwMGts27B5UoBJXzF6CikCeHmJyrWRrR9oWBg/s320/P1170339.JPG" /><br />
<br />

I've noticed a huge confidence boost in my kids when that acquire skills that they are used to seeing adults use. Letting my kids help at every meal can be overwhelming for me, so I choose a meal of the day to let someone help. Today it was lunch and my little helper was my recently-turned-5 little man. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm going to share with you my newest kid-friendly addition to the kitchen, too.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi7ZlDHj2ej7e9kvBasUxFIYKKRrvHZ6K-NL9fdq8s9DxtcJPhyphenhyphen3yTu3eXOhbwqjbbkDpR8P4N3Wd1Wr5rkx832uob-2DlFRN8Xp0NodMJDm9Rj2gQGjn4GVgC863nfzJWV9YgZb0Xq6g/s1600/DSC_5430.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi7ZlDHj2ej7e9kvBasUxFIYKKRrvHZ6K-NL9fdq8s9DxtcJPhyphenhyphen3yTu3eXOhbwqjbbkDpR8P4N3Wd1Wr5rkx832uob-2DlFRN8Xp0NodMJDm9Rj2gQGjn4GVgC863nfzJWV9YgZb0Xq6g/s320/DSC_5430.JPG" width="320" /></a>We cut fruit today and made smoothies for lunch. So where did the learning occur? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Identifying fruit and how to properly peel (if necessary). For us, we sliced strawberries and he learned how to remove the prickly skin and inner core of a pineapple. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. He learned how to properly hold a knife and the food being cut (even though the possibility of him injuring himself with this knife is extremely low). He is still required to use it as though it could chop a finger.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN59f_dGcz5IqFwM-I_jIhcOIeCQq48GRpgHbtbleUTXdEQojGw1d7lc4CYEOg5DCKStAhyWfylLQQOYZObVQCqTLO859gLDymAsZBrx-veJ4vWcRDcyFgliXYfAl8u4gsjdk7Dgt6iFc/s1600/DSC_5427.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN59f_dGcz5IqFwM-I_jIhcOIeCQq48GRpgHbtbleUTXdEQojGw1d7lc4CYEOg5DCKStAhyWfylLQQOYZObVQCqTLO859gLDymAsZBrx-veJ4vWcRDcyFgliXYfAl8u4gsjdk7Dgt6iFc/s320/DSC_5427.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
3. We used measuring cups for the liquid and so he learned about where and how high to fill, how to hold it level, and to identify the labels for measuring.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. Lastly, he counted pieces of fruit----math! For example, I told him, "Add 17 pieces of pineapple." </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpxqZVnf0IYs2rKWbmyN_YECqoQw3Q-js0RcAg7vDFmM7z1Jg3BlidFLlK5Lx7IHrkprM2bmaXRrRXI4sTkKoXds2PN7yCxnIhjnoURJClTVyWAPmuad_Le9fTpAkXZ5zaOX_UYo1YqMc/s1600/DSC_5428.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpxqZVnf0IYs2rKWbmyN_YECqoQw3Q-js0RcAg7vDFmM7z1Jg3BlidFLlK5Lx7IHrkprM2bmaXRrRXI4sTkKoXds2PN7yCxnIhjnoURJClTVyWAPmuad_Le9fTpAkXZ5zaOX_UYo1YqMc/s320/DSC_5428.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
And now, to tell you about these<a href="http://www.amazon.com/StarPack-Nylon-Kitchen-Knife-Piece/dp/B0162AI724/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459183785&sr=8-2&keywords=kid+knife" target="_blank"> knives!!</a> If you haven't seen them already, they are AMAZING! They have a ton of great reviews on Amazon, there are 3 in a pack, and they are sharp enough to cut fruit and veggies, but safe for the kids. I really like them. Right now they are $8.95 for a 3 count (3 different sizes included). I saw these when we were at a friend's house and I am so glad we got them. </div>

Especially weekends when you need to be somewhere early.<br />
I have one early, chirpy riser. She wakes up happy and has no trouble functioning in the morning. My other two...well, let's just say mornings could be more pleasant.<br />
I thought and thought about setting the right mood in the morning. Finally I tried music! I took a playlist that starts my day out right and turned on the music rather than the overhead light. I opened the curtains for some natural light (if there is any at this time of the year!) and let the music roll.<br />
<br />
Not only did my kids wake up happy, get moving quickly, and seem generally more easy-going....but so did I. It was great. So, simple tips from a mom with grumpies in the morning.<br />
<br />
How about you? What do you do to get moving on the right foot in the morning?<br />

According to my three year old, Do-A-Dot markers are all the rage right now. They are great. They offer fine motor work and provide the opportunity to talk about colors while your child does some art. I decided to make a Do-A-Dot page for each of our upcoming weeks this November.<br />
<br />
If you would like to add them to your November activities,<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B984Wp7G0yTWem9hTVEzbFNUeU0/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank"> you can download them here</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Raegan and I spent years creating the ebook <i>Babes, Tots, and Kids</i>. Because of the time we dedicated to it, it is very satisfying to be able to have used it and continue to use it with my children. My three older children are all in school full day now, but I have my cute three year old home with me and she loves doing these activities!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Despite the fact that I have all I need in the book, the creator in me still enjoys adding to what we are doing. This week as we do the dinosaur theme, I decided to focus on the number three for our number this week. In our ebook, we do not assign numbers to each week so that you can start any week of the year and be on track. Our number activities can be applicable no matter what number you are learning about that week. I wanted to create something to go specifically with our number three learning. </div>

I made this simple and fun dinosaur counting page for my three year old and of course want to share with all of you. <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B93px-X-81teNE52MjdnQ2pWLVk/view?usp=sharing">Go here to access the free Dino Counting page</a>. I have three versions for you to choose from so you can decide what is the correct level for your little one(s). All three versions are in the same PDF. Just print the page you want after opening the document. </div>

My youngest liked it so much he begged to keep playing long after the lesson was finished.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of my kiddos really needed some work with counting money. Worksheets and and apps can be fun, but shopping? Pretend play with mommy and siblings? Even better!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have 3 kids, so I put out three towels. This way I can separate activities and skill between kids. Their station was specifically set up for them (with about 2 minutes of prep). I asked each kid to choose any 5 items they would like and lay them out on a towel. I walked around and priced each item according to the skill they are learning. My youngest is counting pennies (essentially just counting with the 1-1 value of a penny). My middle was working on counting nickels and dimes. My oldest worked on "store math." Meaning if something costs $3.56 at the store, you don't count out 56 pennies. You give them most convenient amount to you and expect change. So she could give me a $5 bill, or 4 ones, or 3 ones and 2 quarters and a dime. The list goes on and on. BUT she had to also tell me how much change to expect back. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJoI0uXIDB22ePH7Kt62gK0egC9mD3HxDKM6LHJR2EDuPjMTQIIeAhS2BhOqHJpBQ4UR7J1PLwY6f7UMpBXHx2DS6kihswP0iJfbg2XPdqDS6i9c_ij97QRzwQORSNfVSmxy6XxrwI7F0/s1600/DSC_4736.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJoI0uXIDB22ePH7Kt62gK0egC9mD3HxDKM6LHJR2EDuPjMTQIIeAhS2BhOqHJpBQ4UR7J1PLwY6f7UMpBXHx2DS6kihswP0iJfbg2XPdqDS6i9c_ij97QRzwQORSNfVSmxy6XxrwI7F0/s1600/DSC_4736.JPG" height="320" width="211" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So they read the price tag, used their real money in their banks, and stood in line to buy the items. </div>

Skills: counting, 1-1 correspondence, recognizing coin names, adding.Babes, Tots, and Kidshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07652825288449236458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3564043258896298051.post-53621387320677066812015-04-10T02:00:00.000-07:002015-04-10T02:00:03.900-07:00Gumdrop SculpturesMy oldest is 7 and takes an engineering elective at the co-op we attend. In her class they discussed building design and bridges. Then, they built them with gumdrops and toothpicks.<br />
<br />
My youngest was enthralled with her creations. He loved it. And he wanted to try it! It's a great fine motor activity!<br />
<br />
You'll need: gumdrops (or Dots candy), toothpicks, and a hard surface (like the table)<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tootsie-Assorted-Flavors-7-5oz-Theater/dp/B0056OC8JG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1428023277&sr=8-3&keywords=dots+candy" target="_blank"><img alt="Product Details" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510huprEAHL._AA160_.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Start by helping the build the base. Littles love to build but it can take a while for them to figure out that the base needs to be wide enough/strong enough to support what is going on top. So, to avoid frustration, instead use this as a teachable moment. Test it with them. Let it fall...and LAUGH about it. Failure is learning too!<br />
<br />
Then build. Ask them to create a story about what they are building. Get out little figurines and play in the creation! Build, take it down, and build again! Save a few for munching!<br />
<br />

Teaching or working with the older kids can be a little challenging when you have busy little ones underfoot. I have three kiddos, my first two being 19 months apart and the middle and youngest being 2 years apart. So when I am trying to do independent lessons with my older two, sometimes my youngest gets antsy. Ants in his pants. Too creative, if you know what I mean.<br />
<div>
So, this means I have a few options. My first one is to <strike>tear my hair out and lock myself in my room</strike> quit. My other option (and the one that's better for all of us) is to problem solve. So, my solution to taming the toddler is organizing. </div>
<div>
I found that it is really challenging to make up new activities on top of the activities we already do from<a href="http://www.babestotsandkids.com/p/about-book.html" target="_blank"> the book</a>. Or sometimes, you as the mom need to fold laundry without a cute little person unfolding it right after you. You may work from home and need some time to get a little work done. Whatever the need, a little time and effort on the front end with make a big difference.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, here's what you need to start: 14 L/15 Qt. containers with lids (I used Sterilite) and a permanent marker. I usually store them underneath the art table (aka folding table) for easy access. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's the idea. Take each bucket and choose one for each day of the week (Mon-Fri). You can label it with the day if that floats your boat. The each bucket can be filled with a plethora of different activities. The point is to have each bucket filled with activities that they will only see during this time. </div>
<div>
<br />

As you can see, there are a bunch of different activities for learning. It's also a great opportunity to teach a little self-sufficiency. My son has gotten to the point where he can pull out his box and start the activities independently. It's AWESOME.<br />
<br />
<br />
Sooooo.... the next question is probably, "What in the world am I going to put in these boxes???"<br />
<br />
Here's my stash:<br />
<br />
*<b>Felt mittens with numbers.</b> This can be to practice recognition, put in ascending or descending order, etc. I made mittens (it was cold that day), but you can make anything! Even just cut out an orange circle and glue a tiny green leaf at the top and call it an orange. Or white circles and draw some red lines on it to make a baseball. And the numbers? Stickers. I just used stickers. This took almost no time and I just used $.39 sheets of felt and a glue gun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDCogYnh-nqajuiay0Z5cIVP5ZGZ32LX5TeQf-6_tXNNPBM9ZTpYIlXnp36VmGkCmXFTXeuWQul5H_QKn4dBGEvE8-9hHeXc-YHhhwy3VMBsMy2MWrtb_rFdY9DmjyiB8tNXdbXRkLY-s/s1600/DSC_4468.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDCogYnh-nqajuiay0Z5cIVP5ZGZ32LX5TeQf-6_tXNNPBM9ZTpYIlXnp36VmGkCmXFTXeuWQul5H_QKn4dBGEvE8-9hHeXc-YHhhwy3VMBsMy2MWrtb_rFdY9DmjyiB8tNXdbXRkLY-s/s1600/DSC_4468.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*<b>Puzzles!</b> I found small puzzles that would fit in the boxes (Dollar Store, baby!). </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjbUqzG9ztsC1NyZFvlLAnMH5JTa-TGz-W57XPkX_OpV9FE3eFC9WfftBjNn_9RsTOXzgc3a1RPVcYJleJ1yqst7qNUXuBviwtvUWh6D4YmCmySV0MJaTOxBLWnEuFDDhN4757EF_sPzI/s1600/DSC_4469.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjbUqzG9ztsC1NyZFvlLAnMH5JTa-TGz-W57XPkX_OpV9FE3eFC9WfftBjNn_9RsTOXzgc3a1RPVcYJleJ1yqst7qNUXuBviwtvUWh6D4YmCmySV0MJaTOxBLWnEuFDDhN4757EF_sPzI/s1600/DSC_4469.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*<b>Clothes Pin fine motor practice.</b> Have some clothes pins (Dollar Store, if not!)? Have an empty yogurt or sour cream container? Ta-da! I cut an age appropriate sized hole and he has to open the lid, dump the pins, and stick them in the small hole. Another practice for fine motor strength would be to practice opening in the pins and rimming the outside of the container (without the lid, of course) with them.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*<b>Stackable dolls.</b> Just found these guys around the house. Perfect for lining up small to large (or vice versa) and figuring out which one goes inside the other in the correct order.</div>

*<b>Make-Your-Own Puzzle-</b> My husband drew quick sketch of the two-headed dragon from <i>How To Train Your Dragon</i>. Then he cut it into pieces and my guy has to put it back together. Simple! I store it in a gallon zip lock. Can't draw? Color a page from a favorite coloring book and do the same thing!</div>

Try reading a few books to get some great info and pictures!<br />
<br />

<br />
There are a lot of books out there, but those are just a few to get you started.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Now the fun...</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
1. You'll need a large bowl, ice, water, and shortening/lard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_A_E7qi4zDK0t2Nhn5YWD6SYjITH55rJwT-fsLu7PRTJ4kNrbwW7ptnNLhhc8Dyw-cT51dzsChtOP69-a-mjstUdIKjyKo4BypPMIVb_ChVIbHNsGIHVygQ5IGm9nBmi4xX64TrXUSCY/s1600/DSC_4432.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_A_E7qi4zDK0t2Nhn5YWD6SYjITH55rJwT-fsLu7PRTJ4kNrbwW7ptnNLhhc8Dyw-cT51dzsChtOP69-a-mjstUdIKjyKo4BypPMIVb_ChVIbHNsGIHVygQ5IGm9nBmi4xX64TrXUSCY/s1600/DSC_4432.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
2. Make a lard mitten on ONE of your child's hands. Haha--lard mitten! Anyways. Make sure it's completely covered and there aren't any cracks in it. You don't want any cold water seeping in!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJX88H6LMu-MiT2-ZNU2KxWjBdZUJ4DY7fEjmosyKKSJQrihKVMSw5XlqsU3b7BaMfO7qcWobZg3X8pKd6RfS9JthZcvemfJyR13wjXWbts7gSPxXQGyKEctOCoQxtCuAfm5n7JUYNPwk/s1600/DSC_4437.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJX88H6LMu-MiT2-ZNU2KxWjBdZUJ4DY7fEjmosyKKSJQrihKVMSw5XlqsU3b7BaMfO7qcWobZg3X8pKd6RfS9JthZcvemfJyR13wjXWbts7gSPxXQGyKEctOCoQxtCuAfm5n7JUYNPwk/s1600/DSC_4437.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtwWHnC26-HxHmvZCM3PM3HhU212n0LM2LpUE2TceOQbNO2OxxEMNFfEB1Tf2xARzuYSbYXwiAfiGeLSyVK1R-FmdWbDVlwnnj8qh6o8kQTb-mtTx_INx5phCnaFllarJIwiKt2Nwso2I/s1600/DSC_4434.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtwWHnC26-HxHmvZCM3PM3HhU212n0LM2LpUE2TceOQbNO2OxxEMNFfEB1Tf2xARzuYSbYXwiAfiGeLSyVK1R-FmdWbDVlwnnj8qh6o8kQTb-mtTx_INx5phCnaFllarJIwiKt2Nwso2I/s1600/DSC_4434.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. Dip both hands in the VERY cold water. The uncovered hand will be chilled very quickly, while the lard mitten keeps the other hand nice and toasty! Instant blubber!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia1-So_dQnSjZOOGushDKzTLutshqFTFq-fipVUeF0rXK2K6dULoTvdRVjllUrSIPXeKdLvZxkmsVkO20ieTGMpBmxlgyumbivsaZu-SOrQsgaW-X6gcGaWMx7sPHiSEp85A2c0eK7ewM/s1600/DSC_4435.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia1-So_dQnSjZOOGushDKzTLutshqFTFq-fipVUeF0rXK2K6dULoTvdRVjllUrSIPXeKdLvZxkmsVkO20ieTGMpBmxlgyumbivsaZu-SOrQsgaW-X6gcGaWMx7sPHiSEp85A2c0eK7ewM/s1600/DSC_4435.JPG" height="320" width="211" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now they can understand up close and personal how blubber really works!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

We made these this morning and it was great for emphasis on Resurrection Sunday.<br />
<br />
All you need: Crescent rolls, cinnamon, sugar, butter, and large marshmallows. <span id="goog_821204769"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgNICe7naob88i7HfAU2Fdx_1sIIoMsXmzji3RagN8Cqt8X5yEpTv08C8s_jc1ulwaY-Bjl090hruPYVslvxSlzp5awrscSuL9ZB3w4qlb6FYFLN2nX06jMYK5H6MoVMLTdfFfp7Pcfb0/s1600/DSC_4478.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgNICe7naob88i7HfAU2Fdx_1sIIoMsXmzji3RagN8Cqt8X5yEpTv08C8s_jc1ulwaY-Bjl090hruPYVslvxSlzp5awrscSuL9ZB3w4qlb6FYFLN2nX06jMYK5H6MoVMLTdfFfp7Pcfb0/s1600/DSC_4478.JPG" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Melt the butter in a dish (about 1/4 cup of butter), put 1-2 Tablespoons of cinnamon and sugar in another bowl. I used Immaculate Crescent rolls. but I hear Pillsbury leaks less. These worked just fine and I like that they have <i>less</i> junk in them. And marshmallows. Yum.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Roll a marshmallow in the butter. This represents Jesus (sinless) and that his body was rubbed in oils after crucifixion.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpsDg5bmhmc11QHVoZI_eySxDuD7ljPbxjy8eC8Nl8Z0at2FO_C_FgTTtwOzyp6kaSdrwFIO3KN1gDJ6B8qcljv5vhlUjk_eXIHdK7P-TQEW9-Al2JIYRoYagRNfSuOEiQuIohI2MY-To/s1600/DSC_4480.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpsDg5bmhmc11QHVoZI_eySxDuD7ljPbxjy8eC8Nl8Z0at2FO_C_FgTTtwOzyp6kaSdrwFIO3KN1gDJ6B8qcljv5vhlUjk_eXIHdK7P-TQEW9-Al2JIYRoYagRNfSuOEiQuIohI2MY-To/s1600/DSC_4480.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then roll in cinnamon sugar. This is for the spices also put on his body to prepare for burial.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unroll the triangles. Roll the marshmallow starting at the skinny point towards the large bottom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After rolling, make sure you pinch all the seams and creases the best you can. Please understand that no matter how much you pinch, some WILL leak. They just will. It's fine.</div>
<br />

<br /></div>
During our adventures in Bb, we decided to make Boo-boo Bbs. It's easy-peasy, lots of fun, and what kid doesn't LOVE opening and sticking Band-Aids all around?<br />
<br />
Tell a story first. You know...set the stage. Something like:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwtF8P2nUHnBzhXsEvKdKbPbVkBj7jNIrqoPPk2F9FwD4tv-MMfGzJMBzlGvbyv4MsLLnILmwLoireUqRH8ZoLc2VXE65UZfnbeXkiK0IIrHGp3XieY4fzkCrZzPaT2uknF-w4rH47lIk/s1600/DSC_4425.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwtF8P2nUHnBzhXsEvKdKbPbVkBj7jNIrqoPPk2F9FwD4tv-MMfGzJMBzlGvbyv4MsLLnILmwLoireUqRH8ZoLc2VXE65UZfnbeXkiK0IIrHGp3XieY4fzkCrZzPaT2uknF-w4rH47lIk/s1600/DSC_4425.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a>Mama B and Baby b were playing basketball (bouncing a ball, boycotting bananas, whatever). By the end of the game, both ended up with boo-boos! (Let your kiddo add boo-boos if they want. Otherwise you can do it). What should they do? Bandage those boo-boos!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj00aX1dy6GiIMtWqkhcC7jnIgq4X0dlCNKJ7TiYoJmwNYKFN94Sg-l5f7hfLg-8fGz3-KaiGIyLLUDr0J1LtBNBsGpWopvv6xP7SycPMs93t5TYT8G_MxXmt8XMX4JfEkKNmtZboAqbNs/s1600/DSC_4428.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj00aX1dy6GiIMtWqkhcC7jnIgq4X0dlCNKJ7TiYoJmwNYKFN94Sg-l5f7hfLg-8fGz3-KaiGIyLLUDr0J1LtBNBsGpWopvv6xP7SycPMs93t5TYT8G_MxXmt8XMX4JfEkKNmtZboAqbNs/s1600/DSC_4428.JPG" height="320" width="211" /></a></div>

Now have them pose for with a super awkward smile! Yay!<br />

Here are a few practice sheets I made for practicing the letter Bb with your preschoolers!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr7DtBMeE8-xuHIRkPD7_50MZVssQi6dhrhESVnRp2rHgOjlnEHovLNfNVou9Ro7xgDZJsJ6YAd1WHbdYTHk7xtk78rD-B8oychnGAPExWk2cFuhyK7tl-RfRI_BCj7Ws3sNXlDXHI9I4/s1600/20150322_162023+(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr7DtBMeE8-xuHIRkPD7_50MZVssQi6dhrhESVnRp2rHgOjlnEHovLNfNVou9Ro7xgDZJsJ6YAd1WHbdYTHk7xtk78rD-B8oychnGAPExWk2cFuhyK7tl-RfRI_BCj7Ws3sNXlDXHI9I4/s1600/20150322_162023+(1).jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEfxksP7gGLKSmZyWx4p_0mEibrpvYJOZAvQozezxo1z5YPRPsKrdX60CIX8_j7CwnqXpmHma91u-DjEFrF9js-Mi7YITT3xZRG5fntJzuF2cYTkjR-vpUAcbouKniIOdrVXjV423lqkY/s1600/20150322_162005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEfxksP7gGLKSmZyWx4p_0mEibrpvYJOZAvQozezxo1z5YPRPsKrdX60CIX8_j7CwnqXpmHma91u-DjEFrF9js-Mi7YITT3xZRG5fntJzuF2cYTkjR-vpUAcbouKniIOdrVXjV423lqkY/s1600/20150322_162005.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Free to download and share! Click on <b><u><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B93px-X-81teUHR6eEpEVU1NYTg/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">B is for Bears </a></u></b>for the B is for Bear handwriting work. With the first two rows of Bb, use a highlighter or crayon to trace them and get the hang of it before tracing over the dotted lines with a pencil.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next, try Balloon Prints! Use an ink pad or washable paint. Read the number in each box and put the correct number of prints in each box. Add a string and you've got adorable balloons and a fun counting activity. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B93px-X-81teMzBkTFVpeXA3N1k/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Balloon Prints</a></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In case you want Balloon Prints without the numbers, so you can customize it, <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B93px-X-81teTFVCQ0RBWTFEQ3c/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">here you go! </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you want to reuse the sheet, try a sheet protector or laminating and using rocks, buttons, or just drawing with dry erase markers. </div>

Until this morning.<br />
So, what can you do if you are unprepared but want to make today fun (and throw some learning in there, too)?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLw_UsfYq1chk_Vu2j_aHDY-Kwn4AJlYTJzsrut1HUIar1W2HaMeCMRW9xmlNb9B8VqB2Hbbgr0-_gozez2g0scNmZ1PSxLlvtWm2zJW5Rwl73V16lMShJWjYpamHj_PU1Tt_K8Q2FGmw/s1600/DSC_4329.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLw_UsfYq1chk_Vu2j_aHDY-Kwn4AJlYTJzsrut1HUIar1W2HaMeCMRW9xmlNb9B8VqB2Hbbgr0-_gozez2g0scNmZ1PSxLlvtWm2zJW5Rwl73V16lMShJWjYpamHj_PU1Tt_K8Q2FGmw/s1600/DSC_4329.JPG" height="320" width="211" /></a></div>
Try <a href="https://www.brainpop.com/" target="_blank">BrainPop</a> for a fun <a href="https://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/culture/stpatricksday/" target="_blank">St. Patrick's Day video.</a> It's a little over small one's heads, but even if they get one or two things from the video, it's worth a shot! Or do a little reading about <a href="http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick" target="_blank">St. Patrick online</a>.<br />
<br />
Grab a box of Lucky Charms! The possibilities are endless. I grabbed a few sheets of computer paper and drew up some worksheets really fast. Try tallying, sorting by color, counting, graphing, inequalities ( rainbows > balloons), or an introduction to addition.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Next, add some learning. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Above Right: Introduction to addition! Make piles (hats + hearts = put them together and have them count).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bottom: Graphing! Help them draw lines and figure this out. This is a great time to examine the graph and draw conclusions (most, least, etc)</div>

No Lucky Charms? How about gold wrapped candy (leprechaun loot)? Teach positional words (under, next to, beside, over, etc). Hide the candy around the room and give clues using positional words. If this is easy, give multi-step directions. For example: Walk next to the chair, crawl under it, and look under the couch. </div>

This is the first in a series of posts that I like to call <b>Stree Free Spaces</b>. This is how we make Mommying and teaching a bit easier during the day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTV_UM3wafghzhTuwuiKubyUYm5OuNnHn18iwfJTSz7ttwKyXJHtW6ln12ToIXFt7_qThWO1AKgXf66soJOVAI9F31g2NH08VWInIyD0yiF6ddXUmWoATEMD8oJzHr5RtkgfFTXSuX8Y/s1600/DSC_4248.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTV_UM3wafghzhTuwuiKubyUYm5OuNnHn18iwfJTSz7ttwKyXJHtW6ln12ToIXFt7_qThWO1AKgXf66soJOVAI9F31g2NH08VWInIyD0yiF6ddXUmWoATEMD8oJzHr5RtkgfFTXSuX8Y/s1600/DSC_4248.JPG" height="320" width="211" /></a></div>
Did I just hear a collective Mommy sized groan? Play dough. Play-Doh. Whatever. No matter what you call it, you and I know the truth. More of it ends up on the table, floor, or ground into the grout or carpet than you ever imagined possible. It's like those tiny dough crumbs multiplied and conveniently nestled their way into the nooks and crannies around and under your table (and somehow on little rear ends), only to be overlooked until it's too late.<br />
How about this little friend? <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNgBoyKCc9RjfcHWAKagv9Xr_cXFogRVaLqb4_oTSrTKY2iZAhCTR2fSwqEWVDFMrYrby2bOuk4WVpIxIHL2IIL49erZy6D2d9fUebnmBvJwFOojCtneecirvu41jlPEQqDbaujjXsMyk/s1600/DSC_4254.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNgBoyKCc9RjfcHWAKagv9Xr_cXFogRVaLqb4_oTSrTKY2iZAhCTR2fSwqEWVDFMrYrby2bOuk4WVpIxIHL2IIL49erZy6D2d9fUebnmBvJwFOojCtneecirvu41jlPEQqDbaujjXsMyk/s1600/DSC_4254.JPG" height="320" width="211" /></a></div>
<br />
There aren't any short visits from this delightful container of shimmery fun. A few shakes and you've got a serious situation on your hands.<br />
<br />
I know quite a few Mommies that have outlawed one or both completely. Consider them banished. Not me! It's not that I am completely relaxed about messes either. I like it clean and tidy.<br />
So, what's a Mommy to do? I think somehow we can marry the idea of sparkly fun and livable spaces. How can we maintain stress-free spaces and use glitter or Play-doh at the same time?<br />
<br />
I would like to introduce you to my most used, dishwasher-safe, glitter containing, multi-use item. Ready?<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And you can place each separate activity on a different tray for mess-contained-fun-time. Now you don't have to <strike>run and hide from the glitter section at the craft store</strike> worry! </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1F4XfU4fSBvS1Fay7DohgssK_kMYl5nR5lCGheVoMmAFM0YKz_cIpDK7LQ8LdrCJg-g85njVfaPDTpc8Cv_zWPxeTopUY_HL2GyDQrSPsoY23J8ghe2S0oGPt4AX7dPtENvFPSUTj7uo/s1600/DSC_4250.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1F4XfU4fSBvS1Fay7DohgssK_kMYl5nR5lCGheVoMmAFM0YKz_cIpDK7LQ8LdrCJg-g85njVfaPDTpc8Cv_zWPxeTopUY_HL2GyDQrSPsoY23J8ghe2S0oGPt4AX7dPtENvFPSUTj7uo/s1600/DSC_4250.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A few recommendations:<br />
*Tape off a few holes from the glitter shakers! Lessens the flow and prevents alllll that glitter from coming out at one time.<br />
*Teach your child how to shake the container. Yes, even the little ones. Shake low and go. Shake up high and Mommy will cry.<br />
*You will still manage to find some stowaway glitter on your child's scalp, in their ear, or some other random place. It is the way of glitter. But it will be less with the trays. Way less. So. much. less.<br />
*The trays double as a building board for playdough creations. Crumbs are contained (as long as they aren't walking around with it). Washes easily in the sink/dishwasher. Win-win.<br />
<br />
Frugal tip: If you aren't ready to purchase the trays, try using rimmed baking sheets. You can even pick them up at a dollar store.<br />
<br />
So, what are you waiting for??? Let the sparkly fun begin!<br />

When the freezing rain keeps us inside or we just want to have some fun, this activity is sure to please.<br />
<br />
I came across this sort of idea on Pinterest and swooped in to give it a twist.<br />
<br />
<b>Supplies: </b>Nerf guns, plastic cups, permanent marker.<br />
<br />
<b>Substitutions:</b> Bean bags, small plush stuffed animals, paper balled up, aluminum foil balls for throwing. If you don't have plastic cups, you could tape flash cards to the wall to hit or write the on a dry erase board, if yours is large enough.<br />
<br />
<b>Steps: </b>What skill does your child need to review? Here are some suggestions:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Letter review</li>
<li>Capital or lower case matching</li>
<li>Number identification</li>
<li>Counting</li>
<li>Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, etc</li>
<li>Colors</li>
<li>Shapes</li>
</ul>
<div>
Write what your child is reviewing on a few cups. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoSFgiv9ZTxQWTmrI4XjP7kZM0qnDSaAoJL1xyZaoFdia9dvYrbhe7glWEfx2iM8WX5Fvj5GnwgA3BSEumNPfPY7vmFRN2cXcyTihXcjvQ5IfM2OjLrO3umn_fXU66Ul9i3AEMZ0OQv6A/s1600/DSC_4216.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoSFgiv9ZTxQWTmrI4XjP7kZM0qnDSaAoJL1xyZaoFdia9dvYrbhe7glWEfx2iM8WX5Fvj5GnwgA3BSEumNPfPY7vmFRN2cXcyTihXcjvQ5IfM2OjLrO3umn_fXU66Ul9i3AEMZ0OQv6A/s1600/DSC_4216.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Toddlers and PreK: Call out an items ("Find the letter Bb," "Which letter says /b/?" ). Because aim can be <i>really</i> off at the younger ages (and because they always need the exercise) have them <b>run to touch the correct cup first before attempting to shoot or throw </b>at the correct cup. That way you can be sure they knew the answer. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Older kids can use flashcards, clues, or anything your creative mind can come up with! Put items to count on a card, have them count it, call out the answer (or check the back of the index card for the correct answer), and then shoot! Show them a capital letter and have them match it to the correct matching lower case. The list goes on and on....</div>

There are <i>so</i> many things you can do with Gummy Bears! If you don't have them or don't want to use them, use any fun thing you can find. Crayons, marshmallows, grapes, or raisins are just a few ideas. Or you can always mix it up!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Let's start with the younger ages. Here's a few things you can do:</div>
* Counting! See <a href="http://www.babestotsandkids.com/2015/02/fixing-common-counting-mistakes.html">this post</a> to deal with a common counting mistake.<br />
<br />
* Sort by color, shape, size, or attribute (small and big, wrinkly and smooth, etc).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxkhFytPtZFTxuuq_87Rf72EwJ5c9Xs-l65cPpKkKN6r_O0cLJiAoz3ywJ11w5EYoirXXBvC2WVUD7Py_FpAKab03baK3mpFuuUSMZhO0w-L6kbKKSdBEXfZVSPWrh9DuvIFlCYZWnABc/s1600/DSC_4234.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxkhFytPtZFTxuuq_87Rf72EwJ5c9Xs-l65cPpKkKN6r_O0cLJiAoz3ywJ11w5EYoirXXBvC2WVUD7Py_FpAKab03baK3mpFuuUSMZhO0w-L6kbKKSdBEXfZVSPWrh9DuvIFlCYZWnABc/s1600/DSC_4234.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
*Call out a color and have him/her find the correct color. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* Call out a number and have him/her count out the correct number or items to give to you. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Tallying for older kids:</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyvbJqaBTzMOYecI-x0EEgQMH2Q01-3io2wMTsP8IRpO1eKpsrymjncaP5RTX0ztStsrDJ9S8TfGDgIh3hF8REu85kJ4L1ElLYFAXla5z45EQwFB57Rui1g97jFS6OiF3pOaqLBt1e__o/s1600/DSC_4222.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyvbJqaBTzMOYecI-x0EEgQMH2Q01-3io2wMTsP8IRpO1eKpsrymjncaP5RTX0ztStsrDJ9S8TfGDgIh3hF8REu85kJ4L1ElLYFAXla5z45EQwFB57Rui1g97jFS6OiF3pOaqLBt1e__o/s1600/DSC_4222.JPG" height="211" width="320" /></a><b>Supplies:</b> pretzel sticks (or short straws work), and some kind of item to count/sort. M&Ms work, skittles, grapes (though you may have to chase them! They tend to roll around a bit). We chose gummy bears.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Prep:</b> Gather materials. Separate your kids far enough apart so they have room to work. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Steps:</b> Put the pile of pretzels in the middle of the table. When you give them a scoop of their item they will be able to grab the amount they need.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, give each child a scoop of Gummy Bears. Use your own discretion as to how many they need. If you are teaching tallying, show your child how one item means one tally mark, three items means three, and five looks like this: <strike>1111.</strike> This is a time for learning and practicing, so be patient! </div>

For younger children, it may be best to keep it from 1 to 5. Older children can practice with larger stacks. </div>

<br />
<br />
If you have every watched a younger child (or maybe even a young elementary school aged child) count, you may notice he/she having difficulty with double counting. Watch my son counting here:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwYS9M2EgJ3IdEnX9iSPThqNb6iM11_Z7mpDe31iDffz3456Xr-pARCQoV-eDAi0wsmD0LXOI4pOxoXyNqAPw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you notice, he counts nine bears. However, that is not how many I gave him. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The solution is simple. As long as they know how to count, this should help tremendously. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Have your child move each item as they count. Then they will know when to stop (when they've run out of items to count). You may have to practice with a young child and remind him/her for a while while they remember this new way of counting. </div>
